The former Olympic Stadium’s transformation into a multi-use stadium has seen the specification of rooflights from the UK and Ireland’s leading rooflight manufacturer, Brett Martin. Central to the design is a massive 25,000m2 transparent roof which will bring natural daylight into the Stadium ensuring optimum grass growth and pitch perfect conditions whilst protecting fans from the elements.

Located in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the iconic stadium is managed by E20 Stadium LLP a joint venture between the London Legacy Development Corporation and Newham Council and has been transformed by main contractor Balfour Beatty. Host to five Rugby World Cup 2015 matches this autumn, the Stadium will become the permanent home of West Ham United Football Club as well as the new national competition centre for UK Athletics in 2016.  For what is one of the largest spanning tensile roofs in the world at 45,000m2, the new cantilevered roof incorporates 87 tonnes of Brett Martin’s polycarbonate made up of 4,384 sheets of Marlon CS profiled sheet.

“The transformation of the former Olympic Stadium has been a feat of production and delivery logistics with each sheet cut to size forming 1,684 unique shapes,” commented Hayley Lowry, Marketing Manager of Brett Martin. “Each sheet was labelled with a unique placement code to give its location on the roof and then stacked in order they were used to ease the job for Building Envelope Specialists Lakesmere during the installation of the rooflight sheet.”

With the Stadium width at its deepest at 84 metres, the transparent roof covers all of the 54,000 spectator seating in the Stadium. By incorporating Brett Martin’s Marlon CS Longlife profiled polycarbonate sheet, they will be able to enjoy a bright, airy environment that is protected from the extremes of wet weather as well as protection from the sun’s UV rays.

Offering long term performance, Marlon CS Longlife polycarbonate comes with a co-extruded UV protection layer and carries a 10 year warranty on light transmission and durability, guaranteeing daylight into the newly converted stadium for years to come.

In addition to the former Olympic Stadium, Brett Martin has already enjoyed success with rooflights featuring in a multitude of sports stadia across the country, including Wembley Stadium, Twickenham Stadium and Amex Stadium in Brighton to name but a few. Other stadium projects for 2015 include the Etihad Stadium, Ashton Gate and Anfield.

With the new look Olympic Stadium currently hosting the Rugby World Cup, Brett Martin, the only European company to manufacture all the main plastic rooflight materials - polycarbonate, GRP and PVC, has demonstrated once again that natural light can improve the atmosphere of even the largest of buildings.

Brett Martin is delighted to have the London Olympic Stadium Transformation project voted as runner-up in the design category of the European Polycarbonate Sheets Extruders (EPSE) Awards Competition 2015.
