Cascade Helps Transform a Post-War Property in Bournemouth

Gary Worsfold Post War House

A 1950’s post war bungalow in Bournemouth has been completely transformed through the careful specification of authentic design solutions – including the Brett Martin Cascade Cast Iron Style Rainwater System – ensuring the architectural detail was maintained and enhanced throughout.

Originally built on a vacant lot and surrounded by older inter-war period houses, choice of materials was a key consideration to achieving the architecturally significant appearance of this extended property, ensuring the completed home is in synergy with the architecture of the road. Brett Martin’s Cascade Cast Iron Style Rainwater System was specified by Scott Worsfold Architects as the perfect rainwater solution, combining historical ‘arts and crafts’ aesthetics with exceptional performance in accordance with BS EN 607:1995.

Cascade is manufactured using a unique patented process, so close in detail to genuine cast iron rainwater that it is hard to tell the difference even from close range. Offering the full cast iron aesthetic with the benefits of modern plastic, its authentic styling perfectly complemented surrounding materials, both old and new, proving the perfect addition in the remodelling of this post-war home.

“We specified and agreed to install Cascade on this project because the system is easy to install, self-finished, lightweight and exceptionally affordable and personally the sympathetic choice of materials was important to me as this is my family home,” said Gary Worsfold, a director at Scott Worsfold Architects. “Aesthetically it looks fantastic and it fits within the style of the architecture that we worked so hard to create.”

As well as the obvious visual benefits, Cascade offers many advantages to the installer.  The lightweight system is quick and easy to handle and transport, so it delivers huge efficiencies in product, installation and site costs.  It is also corrosion-free, UV stabilised and comes with a 10 year guarantee making it very low maintenance in comparison to real cast iron.

Sympathetically designed with careful consideration to original features, dimensions and detailing, the Cascade system was specified for this major renovation and extension project in Classic Black in a 112mm Roundstyle gutter profile with complementary 68mm downpipe system.  The authentic style of the Roundstyle system is equally suitable for period new builds and renovations to heritage buildings.  Two Gothic hoppers were installed, enabling the architects to individualise the rainwater system.

Cascade is available in three styles of domestic gutter (106mm Profiled Ogee, 112mm Half Round and, for larger or steeper roofs, a 115mm Deep Profile) which utilise 68mm round or 65mm Square Downpipes. For commercial projects there is a high capacity 160mm Roundstyle Gutter with 105mm round and 100 x 75mm Rectangular Downpipe choice.

Cascade is available in seven heritage colours including Classic Black, the new Anthracite Grey colour option, Oxford Blue, Olive Green, Graphite Grey, Sandstone and Porcelain White which reflect the trend for priming and painting traditional systems.

“The ease of installation and a variety of fittings means the project was completed efficiently and over a short period of time so that we had a functioning gutter system active very quickly.  All in all it’s an excellent product that ultimately, as well as from an architect’s point of view, achieves the absolute aesthetic that we were seeking to achieve,” added Gary Worsfold.
