Scrap: i.e. clean
off cuts of sheet materials.
Sheet off cuts
produced by cutting and trimming to size as part of the installation
process, or panels which have been mechanically damaged, but have
been kept free of contamination by dust or dirt, may be recycled
into lower grade polycarbonate products. The appropriate disposal
route is through a specialist plastic recycling contractor.
Waste: i.e.
contaminated off cut of sheet materials.
Sheet off cuts
that have been contaminated by dust, dirt or other materials which
cannot be totally removed are generally not suitable for recycling,
even to lower grades of polycarbonate. These should be disposed
of in landfill or incinerated under approved conditions.
Polycarbonate
in landfill is inert and benign in terms of its environmental impact.
It will not degrade to any products or by products that would contribute
to soil or water contamination.
Combustion of
polycarbonate yields gaseous by products that consist mainly of
carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and water. Other product may be
formed due to incomplete combustion, aliphatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes,
acids, phenol and phenol derivatives. The overall toxicity of these
combustion gases is determined by the toxicity of carbon monoxide,
whereas the contribution of other combustion products is of lesser
importance.
