Built to accommodate 1,100 pupils the new Leeds East Academy was designed as the school of the future with the Government’s targeted 30% savings being achieved using a revolutionary classroom pod approach to classroom arrangement.
To accomplish the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating a number of environmental and sustainable initiatives had to be achieved including introducing maximum daylight into the envelope of the building to reduce the need for artificial lighting and ultimately running costs. 17 triple glazed Mardome Trade rooflights, thirteen of which measured 1800mm x 1800mm and four 1500mm x 1500mm, were specified to provide free natural daylight in communal areas. The room pods achieve the standard required daylight factor of 2, while the corridors and communal areas – generously top-lit from the Mardome rooflights – achieve an impressive daylight factor of 5.5.
As the school is in a residential area it was also a requirement to restrict noise from the local residential area and eight of the rooflights were supplied with acoustic pack
