Kemball Special School Ritchlight Mono Rooflight

Four bespoke Ritchlight mono-pitch skylights in various sizes and shapes were designed and installed by Brett Martin Daylight Systems at the new Kemball Special School in Stoke-on-Trent.

Designed to meet the challenges of the 21st Century the state-of-the-art facilities opened its doors in September 2013 on the site of the existing Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy and incorporates a hydrotherapy pool, sports hall, drama studio and gym.

The key to the success of this project was involving Brett Martin in the early design stages. Stoke City Council appointed Thomas Vale Construction to deliver the £12M facilities through the Stoke Building Schools for the future programme to accommodate up to 140 pupils with special needs and a dedicated team of technical experts from Brett Martin met with the contractor and carried out site surveys to design rooflights to cater for the school’s every needs.

Fabricated using profiled aluminium glazing bars, powder-coated to RAL 7016, the skylights were glazed in clear glass to deliver the right levels of light transmission and thermal performance at Kemball Special School creating a positive learning environment.

Ranging in length from 4m to 18.9m long the mono-pitched rooflights were mounted on builders upstands prepared in advance by the contractor on the single ply roof. Two of the skylights have curved ends sweeping round to approx 20-25° angles to accommodate the design of the area directly underneath.

Because of the unique shape of the curved rooflights, it was necessary for the Brett Martin team to make several site visits to carefully plan, accurately measure and check templates ensuring rooflights were precision-engineered to fit the upstands and glass ordered and cut to exact dimensions. Multi-facetted ridge flashings had to be specially designed by the team to provide secure weather-proofing around the curved areas – again this took careful planning and cutting.  Finally Brett Martin's team of fully trained installers carefully installed the rooflights.

Ritchlight mono rooflights are available in a variety of configurations to suit a range of roof types. To find out more, click here.
