Emirates Maintenance Hangar, Dubai International Airport

Emirates Maintenance Hangar Dubai

Architect:  ADPi

Main Contractor: Joannou & Paraskevaides (Overseas) Limited

Cladding Contractor:  Tiger Steel

Product: Marlon Clickfix1040 polycarbonate panel glazing system

Completed: 2014

When ADPi designed the impressive Emirates Maintenance Hangar at Dubai International Airport a high performance glazing solution was sought to satisfy the light transmission, thermal performance, fire resistance and wind loading factors. Marlon Clickfix 1040 satisfied all the key glazing essentials and as a result 10,000m² of the click and fix modular glazing system were supplied to create the stunning glazed vertical façade around the entire upper levels of the aircraft hangar.

Built by contractor J&P Ltd, the 25,000m² maintenance hangar was designed to carry out light maintenance of various aircraft including the world’s largest passenger airliner – the Airbus A380, and the hangar is big enough to accommodate up to four of the gigantic aircraft. The Marlon polycarbonate glazing panels were supplied in a silica green tint to match Emirates Airlines’ corporate colours, and delivered in 10.65m lengths and in runs of over 400m for the front and back and 30m for each side of the building and for the lower 2.5m of the 95m wide Jewer hangar doors.

To accommodate the thermal movement of the building the Marlon Clickfix had to allow for up to 90mm vertical deflection, with the secondary steel work adjusted to provide distributed support and reduced deflections.

Working closely with cladding contractor, Tiger Steel, Brett Martin provided a full technical support service which included site visits, detailed drawings and a full bespoke step by step installation guide as well as the provision of on-site assistance during the ten week installation period.

To minimise the visual impact of the project’s sheet end closures on the façade, Brett Martin specially engineered bespoke corner profiles made from 2mm polycarbonate.
