Buchanan Bus Station

Buchanan Bus Station Skylight

With the 2014 Commonwealth Games looming, Glasgow City Council’s regeneration programme is well and truly underway. Buchanan Bus Station is the biggest in Scotland with around 1,700 bus journeys departing from the station every day, and over 40,000 passengers using these journeys on a daily basis. As one of the key transport hubs during the Games, the station will no doubt be one of the major gateways for those travelling to and from the various sporting venues.

As part of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs, the roof refurbishment works included installing solar panel systems and a x 65m long Ritchlight dual pitched rooflight, glazed in Pilkington activ blue, self-cleaning glass over the main concourse.  The rooflight beams natural daylight into the building allowing the artificial lighting requirement to be turned down or off, which can save on electricity consumption.

The rooflight was installed by Brett Martin’s own team of installers and due to the demanding daily travel activity at Buchanan Bus Station which could not be disrupted, the work had to be carried out between the hours of 23:00 and 06:00, when the main concourse was closed to avoid any travel disruptions.
