Marlon CS Longlife helps create “Stade des Lumières” (Stadium of Light)

Parc Olympique Lyonnais Marlon CS Longlife Over 7600m² of clear, 1mm thick Marlon CS Longlife corrugated polycarbonate sheets were supplied by Brett Martin for the Parc Olympique Lyonnais stadium in Lyon, France. Marlon CS corrugated polycarbonate was specified for the inner section of the canopy roof due to the high levels of light transmission offered by the sheet.

Parc Olympique Lyonnais, nicknamed the Stade des Lumières (stadium of light), is a 59,186-seat next generation multi-purpose arena. The stadium, which officially opened in January 2016, is a word-class venue, equipped with all the necessary features required by UEFA to host international tournaments and events. It is the new residence of French football club Olympique Lyonnais and hosted many of the EURO 2016 games as well as the final of the European Rugby Cup 2016.

A key design consideration of the project was to create a beacon of light when the stadium was lit up at night. The use of clear Marlon CS rooflights allowed for the impressive lighting of the stadium to escape the canopy roof and be seen from afar. This combined with the transmission of natural daylight into the stadium during the day made Marlon CS corrugated polycarbonate the perfect material for the canopy roof.

The importance of natural daylight in stadiums has become increasingly evident in recent years as it not only creates a bright and airy environment for spectators but also provides the perfect environment for healthy grass growth and an attractive pitch with no shadows, particularly important for televised matches.

Marlon CS Nervesco was the chosen profile to match with the corrugation of the metal roofing sheet to allow for a seamless transition from the metal roof to the polycarbonate canopy. Marlon CS Nervesco also has the relevant Avis Technique, CSTB approval, essential for construction materials being used in France.

Brett Martin not only manufactured and supplied the corrugated polycarbonate rooflight sheet but also worked closely with the roofing contractors, SMAC, from design stage right through to installation to provide technical support and to ensure that installation guidelines were followed.

Marlon CS polycarbonate sheets are available in a range of thicknesses, profiles and options to suit a wide range of roofing applications. The material is light in weight yet durable and impact resistant, allows light transmission into the stadium and is easy to handle. The unique and transparent appearance enables designers to integrate the material as part of the overall design.
