2017 iAwards winners announced

Brett Martin 2017 iAwards winners The votes have been counted and the results of the 2017 iAwards are in. This year’s edition saw a high number of entries, from different industries showcasing the versatility and creative possibilities the Brett Martin plastic sheets range has to offer. The standard was high and the judges had a difficult task, but we are delighted to announce the ‘Carport Tree’ the winner of the 2017 iAwards. Congratulations! The Carport Tree was followed closely by the ‘Beach Huts’ who came second and the ‘Hagymatikum Spa’ which took third place.

1st Place - Carport Tree
10mm Marlon FS was used to create this bespoke and very unique carport tree. The owner was looking for a carport that would be strong enough to protect his cars from getting damaged by falling acorns and also stand out as a piece of art on its own. A grinding wheel was used to cut the shape of the leaves out of polycarbonate which were then treated with acrylic paint in different autumnal colours. This created a spectacular effect, especially when the sun hits the translucent polycarbonate leaves and the different colours of each leaf is reflected in the surroundings. The application was submitted by Laurence Seynhave, from Seynhave Plastics in Belgium who said: ‘’We are over the moon to be this year’s winner. When the artist approached us with the idea to combine functionality with design, we immediately recommended Marlon FS polycarbonate. The material offers strength, yet its lightweight character and ease of workability provided the perfect combination to create this stunning and bold tree.

2nd Place – Beach Huts
Located at East beach, Shoeburyness, Southend on Sea, these contemporary beach huts feature 16mm Marlon ST Triplewall Clear sheets used as outer lining of the walls. Combined with a plywood inner lining, cavities were created and filled with pebbles, gravel, glass chippings, shells and other recycled material to create an individual pattern for each hut as well a providing thermal mass, privacy and security. ‘’It was a great experience working with Brett Martin on this project. The technical advice and testing of the material helped us realise our vision within our set budgets. As the material had to be strong enough to hold the weight of the pebbles whilst providing light transmission without compromising security, Marlon ST polycarbonate proved to be the ideal product. We are thrilled to have won 2nd place and have our Beach Huts featured in the 2017 calendar’’, added Gill Scampton from Pedder & Scampton Architects.

3rd Place – Hagymatikum Spa
10mm Marlon ST Clear Twinwall was used as protective glazing of the main tower and domes of the Hagymatikum thermal baths, located in Makó, Southern Hungary. Polycarbonate multiwall sheets were placed over the glass tower and domes to act as a protective barrier for the glass underneath, without compromising the flow of natural daylight. Designed by prominent architect Imre Makovecz, the building is a typical example of Makovecz’s organic style of architecture which is reflected in the domes and arches that are shaped like onions, for which Makó is famous. Mr. Horváth from Schnaider Hungary adds: ’’Being part of this project has been an honour for us. Makovecz’s legacy lives on in Makó and the stunning building is a great example of Hungarian architecture. We used 10mm Marlon ST Twinwall as it provides high light transmission, is light in weight yet provides excellent structural durability and high impact and damage resistance’’.
