Cascade Chosen in Refurbishment of 19th Century Former Vicarage

Cascade Islesworth House

For the refurbishment of a 19th century former vicarage on the banks of the Thames in Old Isleworth, the architect combined a careful and sensitive choice of materials throughout, with the Brett Martin Cascade Cast Iron Style Rainwater System playing an integral part in the restoration.

Winner of the Best Residential Renovation UK at the 2015 International Property Awards, the three storey house on Church Street has been sensitively extended and converted by architect Louise McDonnell of MCD Architects with the addition of a new three storey attached ecohouse. Located within the Isleworth Riverside Conservation Area, the redevelopment had to respect the character of the existing architecture in terms of scale, design and in particular, the use of materials.  It was crucial for all product specifications to strike a balance between aesthetics, long term performance and cost-effectiveness.

To meet the requirements, MCD specified a Brett Martin Cascade Rainwater System comprising a high capacity 160mm Roundstyle Gutter and 105mm Round Downpipes, completed with the addition of Cascade cast iron effect Hoppers. Lightweight and easy to install, the Cascade System ensured an architecturally sympathetic appearance was achieved in the shortest time possible and without the health and safety implications of handling and installing cast iron.

Commenting on the restoration Louise McDonnell of MCD Architects said, “We have specified Cascade before and once again we found this sympathetic cast iron style rainwater system was able to tick all the boxes in terms of aesthetics, price and ease of installation. The system also blended well with the attached ecohouse to create a seamless transition between the old and the new.”

Offering the appearance of traditional cast iron with all the benefits of plastic materials, Cascade is a fraction of the price of cast iron or other materials such as aluminium.  Real cast iron products are also heavy and time consuming to work with as they need to be cut to size using grinders before being primed, sealed and finished on site. Cascade 160mm Roundstyle Gutter System is ideally suited to refurbished period properties with larger roof areas, combining old style detailing with high levels of roof drainage.

Significantly lighter than cast iron rainwater systems, Cascade is quicker, easier and safer to install at a height, helping to offer huge efficiencies in terms of on-site installation costs. The system features external fixing lugs which enable easy power tool access, further speeding up installation. All gutter fitting joints have integral seals and flexible retaining clips, allowing the gutter lengths to simply click into place. Offering a ten year guarantee, Cascade is UV stabilised which protects against rusting or corrosion and ensures a maintenance free system that will stay looking great and working well for years to come.

With this sensitive refurbishment now complete, Brett Martin’s Cascade Cast Iron Style Rainwater System has become an integral element of the architectural detailing, giving the appearance of cast iron with all the benefits of modern plastic products.
