The installation is inspired by Clerkenwell’s waterways and architecture, creating a light-filled seating space beneath St John’s Gate.
A collaboration between Magnus Mulvany, Gabi Spangenthal and Julio Manchón Campillo, it reimagines public space through sustainable materials – forming two visually striking benches.
"We designed the installation for Clerkenwell Design Week centred around leftover Brett Martin materials from previous projects and wanted to create a moment of pause to appreciate Clerkenwell’s unique architecture while reimagining the use of public space.
We were inspired by Clerkenwell’s rich water heritage, which connected naturally with Brett Martin’s corrugated materials. We also used other reclaimed Brett Martin products to form the bench structure. Their translucence gave the installation a soft, layered quality, allowing glimpses of the planting beyond and creating changing patterns of light throughout the day.
We were able to complete the installation with Marlon BioPlus sheets, which Brett Martin kindly donated. Brett Martin’s materials were incredibly versatile, resilient and eye-catching, and they played a key role in bringing the installation together."
