StormCrate55 was installed to serve primarily as an attenuation system to manage excessive stormwater at a new wood recycling plant in North Derbyshire, whilst also serving as a backup water reservoir as part of the site’s fire risk reduction plan.
Located on the outskirts of Chesterfield, the new wood recycling facility is expected to be operational by Autumn 2026. The large underground tank, just shy of 1,000 m3, was installed underneath an area identified to become a car park and required a high-strength and high-performance system capable of withstanding regular HGV traffic.
Tudor Griffiths Builders Merchants supplied the Brett Martin technical team with architects’ drawings in order to calculate how many crates were required.
Aquatech Civils installed the crates in two stages and worked to reconfigure the tank to work around a buried water main. Outlets were fitted 400 mm above the invert of the tank to ensure a minimum volume of water was retained, ready to be used in case of fire. The tank was then wrapped in an impermeable membrane with a protective fleece layer.
Speaking about installing StormCrate55, Joe Brown from Aquatech Civils said: “At only 15.5kg each, the crates were very easy to install, and we completed the project in five days. StormCrate55s are light but incredibly solid and sturdy. We carried out pressure tests on each weld of the membrane to ensure a good seal and extrusion welded the internal corners.”
